Aston Martin unveils V8 Vantage GT in New York

Aston Martin has revealed a new V8 Vantage GT at the New York Motor Show.  As you will see, it is the least expensive Aston Martin since the 1980s, but also the most focused with 430bhp and a 190mph top speed.  Unfortunately, it won’t be coming to the UK as it is destined for the American market only.  However, it is based on the N430 which will arrive in the UK later this year.  Andrew Merritt-Morling, managing editor of our motoring media partner, first4auto, travelled to New York to take a peek.

The V8 Vantage GT has been created to make Aston Martin “more accessible to sports car enthusiasts than ever before”.  When it goes on sale, it will cost $99,900 – the equivalent of £59,585 at current exchange rates.

The V8 Vantage GT is based on the special edition N430 which itself was revealed at the Geneva Motor Show last month.  It shares a number of mechanical and surface changes.

Available as either a Coupe or a Roadster, the V8 Vantage GT drives the rear-wheels through a choice of a 6-speed manual ‘box or a 7-speed single-clutch Sportshift II automated manual.  Under the bonnet lurks a tuned version of Aston Martin’s 4.7-litre normally-aspirated V8 producing 430bhp and 361lb ft of torque at 7,300rpm and 5,000rpm respectively.  A valved air intake system and active spark strategy helps the engine power the Aston to 62mph from a standing start in 4.6 seconds before going on to top-out at 190mph.

In addition to the tuned engine, Aston’s engineers have also furnished the V8 Vantage GT with a sports exhaust, competition-derived brakes, a sports suspension and a quick-ratio steering rack.

Inspired by the Vantage GT4 race car, the V8 Vantage GT features 19-inch diamond-turned forged alloy wheels, black headlamp bezels and black surrounds for the clear rear light clusters, side window surrounds and textured tailpipe finishers.

The GT is available in a choice of colour schemes: Alloro Green with white, Jet Black with silver, Skyfall Silver with anthracite, Mariana Blue with silver and Speedway White with silver.  An optional graphics pack is also available and the grille surround, mirror caps and rear diffuser blade can be personalised in a choice of colour combinations: blue/red, black/grey, white/red, silver/white or classic green/yellow.  Roadster models come only with a black fabric top.

Inside, the leather-lined interior comes in black or grey with yellow, black, grey or red accents.  Piano black trim, carbon sill plaques, black magnesium paddle-shifts or carbon-fibre gearshift surrounds provide exclusive detailing, as does a leather steering wheel with contrasting stitching.  The seats are the same as those used in the V12 Vantage S.

There are a whole host of options you can select from to equip your car to the standard you would expect any six-figure car to come equipped with, including heated seats, cruise control, Bluetooth, or memory seats.  Alternatively, there is a stomping 1,000-watt Bang & Olufsen sound system – or a myriad of other things from the long list of options.

So, is this too good a deal?  What’s the catch?  Well, as sweet as it is, the V8 Vantage is now a decade-old car which has seen relatively few changes since its launch.  The spectacular Jaguar F-Type provides a worthy opponent so Aston needs a focused GT to keep the car on the radar’s of prospective buyers.  The discounted price is the icing on this very sweet cake.

As we said at the top of this article, although the GT specced V8 Vantage is exclusive to the US market, the UK will start to see the first deliveries of the £89,995 N430 in September.
